The city of Madison has awarded grants to seven community organizations to install on-site solar power projects, according to a release from RENEW Wisconsin, a renewable energy advocacy organization.

This year’s MadiSUN Backyard Solar grants totaled over $50,000 and were received by:

  • Access Community Health Center, a health care provider;
  • Common Wealth Development, a housing provider;
  • Dane County Humane Society, an animal shelter;
  • Madison Area Cooperative Housing Association, a housing provider;
  • Madison Development Corporation, a housing provider;
  • ReJenerate Housing Cooperative, a housing provider; and
  • Rooted, an urban agriculture organization.

The Backyard Solar program incentivizes nonprofit organizations and affordable housing providers to install solar electric systems. Grants cover up to 20% of the cost of a new solar array, helping offset upfront expenses for mission-based organizations installing solar energy.
