This summer, the city of Madison will launch an experiment making three blocks of State Street more pedestrian-friendly, NBC15 reports. The move follows Madison Metro’s removal of the 400, 500, and 600 blocks of State Street from routes.
The experiment will look at low-cost ways to test the idea of a pedestrian mall. The move is aimed not only at appealing to pedestrians but also at helping businesses. While certain aspects of the street will be altered for the experiment, some aspects like curbs cannot be changed, and some of the street will need to be left clear for businesses to receive deliveries.
The experiment is anticipated to be underway by UW–Madison’s graduation and should be concluded around Halloween. In the meantime, the city is collecting feedback on impressions of the project. The survey is available here.
