A recent study from CoworkingCafe analyzed and ranked 90 U.S. cities that offer the best combination of career prospects, child care availability, and quality of life, and Madison takes second place among Midwestern U.S. cities, ranking 21st in the nation for a family and work-friendly environment.

The city stands out with 176.8 pediatricians for every 100,000 children — second only to Cincinnati in the Midwestern region, which boasts 223.2 pediatricians per 100,000 children. Nationally, Madison ranked with the 11th-highest availability.

Madison ranks first in the Midwest and 12th nationally in terms of remote-eligible jobs, with 73.1% of residents working in office jobs, while 15.3% of its workforce is composed of remote workers.

Although parents spend 25.2% of the household median income on child care here, that’s still just slightly above the national median of 19%.
