Local tax preparer to serve prison time for false returns

Madison-based tax preparer Yvonne Spencer has been sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for filing false tax returns, according to a report from the Wisconsin State Journal.

Spencer was found guilty of filing tax returns containing false information between 2013 and 2017 resulting in more than $292,872 in fraudulent tax refunds. Spencer directed $48,000 of the refunds to herself and also collected tax preparation fees. The prison time will be followed by one year of supervised release, and Spencer has been ordered to pay restitution to the IRS.
