United Way of Dane County has reported an increase in calls to its 211 helpline, and other local philanthropic organizations are also seeing a rise in demand, according to WMTV15.

The 211 helpline is a free, confidential service. It helps connect people to legal assistance, mental and physical health services, and other resources. Calls this year for housing and food assistance have risen 80% over last year.

United Way partner Second Harvest Foodbank has echoed reports of increased food insecurity. It affects nearly 130,000 people in Second Harvest’s 16 Wisconsin counties, according to the organization, over 40,000 of whom are children.

Both nonprofits are seeking financial donations to support food purchases and other resources for the community.
