Madison homeless shelters are reporting record numbers of people seeking a place to stay, WMTV15 reports.

Last month, Porchlight’s overnight men’s shelter reached an all-time high, serving 400 people in one night and averaging roughly 370-380 people per night.

The news comes as officials prepare for a federal cut that could jeopardize housing assistance for 150 local households. Most of the funding is for permanent housing programs through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Dane County officials say there is a potential for staff cuts and the ability to serve fewer people by the end of this year or in early 2027.

Wisconsin joined a multistate lawsuit against HUD in November to block the funding changes. The litigation remains pending.
