In a report from the Wisconsin State Journal, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division alleges that as many as 24 Madison-area companies must pay 275 employees back for wages they never received.
After a two-year study of Madison hospitality payroll records — part of a broader study of Midwest college towns — the department determined that more than $724,000 in back wages are due. Violations range from not paying overtime to failing to keep accurate records, or paying servers tips only.
Laredo’s Mexican Restaurant had the most violations and must return $402,391 to 86 employees. Cocina Real owes $118,471 to 27 employees, while State Street Brats owes $15,033 to 84 employees. Restaurants can appeal the order.
