An almost $2 million project that would reconstruct and widen Interstate 94 in Milwaukee, which received the go-ahead with a key federal government endorsement in March, has been delayed due to a lawsuit by project opponents, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Construction was originally set to begin in 2025, but even if it still does, the suit could force additional Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) funding for public transit enhancements.
The project’s opposition says state and federal transportation officials did not seriously consider an alternative transit option to I-94’s expansion from six to eight lanes. Opponents say that primarily harms people of color in the area who do not own cars. They also say a rebuild with six lanes and expansion of transit, particularly with express bus service, would expand commuter options.
WisDOT and business groups supporting the expansion say the project is necessary to reduce congestion and boost safety.
