When the last order of thinly sliced ham moves down the production line today, it will mark the end of the Oscar Mayer legacy in Madison, which began 98 years ago.
Only a handful of employees will remain through July to clean and dismantle the plant, as reported in the Wisconsin State Journal.
In its heyday in the 1970s, Oscar Mayer employed 4,000 on Madison’s east side. In 1981, Oscar Mayer stockholders elected to sell the company to General Foods, which set the company down a road of ownership changes.
Kraft Heinz, the company’s current parent company, announced in 2015 that it would close the Madison plant along with six other plants around the country and in Canada.
