On a vote of 4-0, the Madison Landmarks Commission approved a plan to repurpose the former Holy Redeemer Catholic School at 144 W. Johnson St. The building, constructed in 1892, will be converted into about 60 student apartments that could open in the fall of 2014. The building had been offering programs for the parish’s Hispanic population, which argued against the decision, but renovating and keeping the landmark building as a church would have reportedly cost too much due to its state of disrepair.
