Labor Department data revisions released Tuesday showed the U.S. job market was much weaker in 2024 and early 2025 than originally reported, according to the Associated Press.
From April 2024-March of this year, employers added 911,000 fewer jobs than originally reported. The finding adds to concerns about the health of the nation’s economy.
Leisure and hospitality firms — including hotels and restaurants — added 176,000 fewer jobs than originally reported, while professional and business services companies and retailers added 158,000 fewer and 126,000 fewer, respectively.
The benchmark revisions, issued by the department every year, aim to better account for new businesses and those that had gone out of business.
Tuesday’s numbers are preliminary; final revisions will be released in February 2026.
