According to the Wisconsin State Journal, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has fined Labcorp $9,000 for five alleged animal research laws violations; four of the citations involve the company’s Madison facility.
Based in Burlington, North Carolina, Labcorp in 2015 bought Covance and currently conducts drug testing at its facility near the Dane County Regional Airport.
Between 2018 and 2022, six monkeys or similar animals were injured, with most of the injuries involving broken bones, according to the USDA, which resulted in four of the animals’ euthanization. Two of them sustained “non-repairable orthopedic injuries,” in Madison from improper handling and were euthanized, and a monkey’s femur was fractured in Madison also from improper handling, leading to euthanization. Two monkeys in Madison also had broken arms due to their handling. Labcorp’s facility in New Jersey was responsible for the fourth euthanization after a monkey became lethargic and dehydrated.
Labcorp said in a statement that the company takes its “ethical and regulatory responsibilities very seriously. We treat research animals with the greatest care and respect, and we are dedicated to complying with all applicable regulatory and compliance guidelines.”
