The Madison City Council overrode Mayor Paul Soglin’s veto to allow Koi Sushi at 502 State St. to serve liquor, granting instead a license with a number of conditions, including a requirement to stop selling liquor earlier than most establishments each night.
Soglin has long argued against more liquor licenses downtown due to the cost of bar-time policing and public safety, but the Council overturned his veto believing the business would not directly threaten safety, according to a Capital Timesstory.
Earlier this year, Koi Sushi was cited for attempting to boost its restaurant space by tearing down an interior wall into a vacant space next door without obtaining permits and city approvals.
