June jobs report: U.S. economy adds 80,000 new jobs

The U.S. economy added 80,000 new jobs in June, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Labor, and the official unemployment rate remained at to 8.2%.

After a promising start to the new year in January and February, when more than 200,000 jobs were reported each month, June marks the fourth consecutive month of disappointing job creation. Labor economists say the economy must create at least 150,000 new jobs each month just to keep up with changes in the labor market, and it must create about 250,000 to quickly bring down the unemployment rate.

Based on recent economic data, economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast a gain of 100,000 new jobs in June.
