Middleton-based Spectrum Brands must pay a $1.9 million fine because it waited too long to report a product defect in its Black & Decker SpaceMaker coffee carafe that resulted at least 1,600 broken handles and injuries to about 70 people, according to reports.

Apparently, the company also kept selling the product after it had filed a report with the Consumer Product Safety Commission in April 2012.
