The Dane County Sheriff’s Department has contracted with Telmate, to provide tablet computers to inmates in the Dane County Jail, according to an article in the Capital Times.

Telmate is an inmate communications company that provides secure, self-contained systems including software and hardware. Each tablet would reportedly serve between two and four inmates, allowing them to read books online, stream music, or check email.

Inmates would pay for the opportunity to email or listen to music, and that revenue would be returned to the general fund.

The tablets cost the Sheriff’s department nothing, and the county is determining which programs to offer. The Rock County Sheriff’s office has offered tablets to inmates for almost three years.
