The IRS on Wednesday furloughed almost 50% of its  workforce as part of the continuing government shutdown, the Associated Press reports.

The agency said in a letter to its workers that most IRS operations are closed.

The shutdown has entered its second week after President Donald Trump and Congress failed to strike an agreement to fund federal operations.

The IRS’ initial Lapsed Appropriations Contingency Plan provided for only the first five business days of operations and was reliant on Inflation Reduction Act funds.

Moving forward, only 39,870 employees (53.6%) will remain at the agency — it is unclear which workers will be affected.
