Madison’s City Council added $250,000 into the budget this year to study the feasibility of adding freeway access to Interstate 94 from Milwaukee Street east of Sprecher Road.
Without taking a position on the outcome, the council also recommended spending another $250,000 in 2019 to complete a more in-depth Interstate Access Justification Report, according to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal.
The idea has been raised before and at this stage is very preliminary, but if the studies found the idea feasible, local governments might have to fund it, according to a DOT spokesperson.
Adding freeway access at Milwaukee Street would essentially split the distance between the Highway N/I-94 interchange and the Stoughton Road/I-94 interchange in half. Wetland studies related to nearby Door Creek Park would also need to be conducted, and the Federal Highway Administration would have the final say.
