The United States House of Representatives voted 275–134 early this week in favor of increasing COVID-19 relief checks to $2,000, according to a report from the Associated Press.
The bigger payments meet President Donald Trump’s demand to give more direct aid, but the Republican-controlled Senate has opposed more spending and the expected outcome on the Senate vote is unclear.
Earlier today, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked a Democrat-led effort to bring the $2,000 checks up for an immediate vote, stating instead that the Senate would “begin a process” for tackling the issue.
