A lack of HUD funding is forcing Porchlight’s Safe Haven transitional program to close by the end of the year.

Safe Haven opened in 1995, but its 14-bed shelter for the homeless and mentally ill was a new addition in 2012. Now, the Nekoosa Trail facility will close on Dec. 31 due to a lack of funding, and 12 full-time employees will lose their jobs.

According to media reports, Safe Haven was federally funded and for years received most of its $400,000 operating budget from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. That funding is ending because Dane County’s Homeless Services Consortium chose to fund coordinated entry, a different program offering permanent supportive housing, instead.

Meanwhile, Porchlight, will continue offering its services in Dane County.
