In downtown Madison, the State Office Building and State Natural Resources Building will vacate staff over the next few years and join the already empty State Education Building, as plans to sell the trio of structures move forward, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.

The buildings, all located within a few blocks of the Capitol Square, have drawn high interest from developers and are likely to be transformed into a mix of hospitality and residential facilities, with some street-level storefronts.

The State Office Building, located at 1 W. Wilson St. and designated in the National Register of Historic Places, will close following the Department of Health Services’ move to the State Labor Building at 201 E. Washington Ave. The State Education Building at 125 S. Webster St. was emptied late last year and is currently closed. The State Natural Resources Building at 101 S. Webster St. is scheduled to close by summer 2026, with the Department of Natural Resources’ move to the Hill Farms State Office Building on the city’s west side.

The State Office Building, State Education Building, and State Natural Resources Building are valued at $26 million, $26 million, and $33 million, respectively.
