Background check calls to the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Crime Information Bureau Handgun Hotline have risen significantly, corresponding to the concern over the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal.
DOJ reported 2,171 calls on March 18 alone, more than four times the daily average in March 2019. The surge in gun sales comes despite Madison police data that shows beginning on March 14, daily calls for service dropped by as much as 35 percent compared to historical averages.
All registered firearms dealers are required to obtain a background check for a purchaser before selling a gun.
