Shrimpers in the U.S. are facing high fuel prices, fewer shrimp and competition from exports, leading to a less than stellar shrimping fishing season.
According to an NPR report, a monthlong trip used to cost about $20,000 less for fishermen, but they now expect to pay about $47,000 before heading out to fish.
Foreign and farm-raised shrimp have also been an obstacle even before the fuel prices increase.
Shrimpers are hoping legislation in Washington will stop using U.S. tax money subsidizing foreign shrimp operations. The Save Our Shrimpers Act is currently waiting for action in the Senate.
