Group appeals to high court to stop student loan forgiveness

The Brown County Taxpayers Association is appealing an unsuccessful lawsuit filed by Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) to block President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness program, according to an Associated Press report. The group is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene and put the program on hold to consider the group’s appeal. The suit, filed by the conservative institute, argued that the program was an overextension of executive power that improperly sidestepped Congress. The original complaint was thrown out by a federal judge in Wisconsin and then rejected by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. U.S. District Judge William C. Griesbach also denied an emergency motion for an injunction. Biden enacted the program under the HEROES Act, which gave the executive branch authority to forgive student loan debt in association with military operations or national emergencies. The debt relief plan began accepting applications this week.
