An alternative burial project that is better for the environment and less expensive is moving forward, according to a report from Channel 3000. Terrance Wall, founder of Wisconsin Foundation, is planning a 20-acre development near Governor Nelson Park in Waunakee to alleviate the burden on the number of cemeteries in Dane County that are filling up or already full. The natural burial preserve would only allow the use of cloth and wood in the graves which would likely have trees and other plants as markers. The alternative to granite tombstones and concrete graves is considered less impactful on the environment. Plans call for the cemetery to have an open-air public park shelter as well as both walking and bike paths. The project has passed the zoning process and developers now have to provide a specific site plan for city approval. If approved, plots are expected to become available as early as the summer of 2022.
