Government shutdown could be longest yet

The AP reports Monday that Republican Speaker Mike Johnson predicted the federal government shutdown may be the longest in history.

Johnson won’t go to the negotiating table unless Democrats pause their health care demands and reopen.

Vice President JD Vance said there would be “painful” cuts ahead, with no end in sight.

Some things affected by the shutdown include general government operations, flight disruptions and the closing of Smithsonian museums. Reduction in force notices, essentially layoffs, have gone out to federal workers in the departments of Commerce, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Homeland Security and Treasury,

With the debate over health care policy at a stalemate, some experts expect the shutdown to last until the end of the month.
