Legislative Republicans’ plan to audit diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) positions within state government and the Universities of Wisconsin was approved Tuesday, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The lawmakers’ vote will order the Legislative Audit Bureau to conduct the audit.

The audit comes after a 2019 executive order signed by Gov. Tony Evers requiring state agencies to create equity and inclusion plans, as well as the UW system’s 2023–28 strategic plan, highlighting its commitment to DEI.

The audit will look at:

  • What DEI efforts are underway currently within the state government and UW;

  • How much is spent on these efforts; and

  • The practices’ reported outcomes.

Legislative Audit Bureau Director Joe Chrisman said a final report containing recommendations could be completed sometime in 2025.
