A new GOP bill proposes limiting Universities of Wisconsin tuition to the rate of inflation, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. The news comes just weeks after the UW Board of Regents gave the green light to a tuition increase for in-state students, and a budget deal approved the largest state funding increase in 20 years.
The bill would effectively be a limited “tuition freeze,” imposing a ceiling on tuition and fees the Regents could set going forward.
The in-state tuition increase approved earlier this month was 4% across the board, with an option for the universities to add another 1%. The rate of inflation for 2024, meanwhile, was 2.9%.
UW system spokesperson Mark Pitsch said in a statement that the campuses are among the U.S.’ most affordable college options, adding, “it is critical that we have the flexibility to maintain” the quality of UW.
