Goodman Center’s START Literacy Initiative hosting film screening, symposium

The Goodman Community Center’s START Literacy Initiative will host a “This LIT Just Got Serious: Community Film Screening and Symposium” from 5–8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3 at Ironworks, 149 Waubesa St. The evening will feature a screening and discussions of the literacy documentary Hopeville, presentations from Madison-area organizations and literacy professionals, and a variety of resource tables.

Attendees will be able to ask questions and peruse resources in the space until 8:30 p.m. Resource tables will include Classmates Literacy Foundation, United Way of Dane County’s Schools of Hope, Guardian Whiskers, and Madison Reading Project. The evenings featured presenters are One City School’s Director of K–8 and Elementary Principal Maria Dyslin; Lowell Elementary School Principal Ellen Franzone; Beverly Trezek, UW’s literacy faculty lead; and Tom Owenby, associate dean of the UW School of Education.

The event includes free pizza from Ian’s, ice cream from Chocolate Shoppe, and supervised activity-based child care for kids ages three and up. Registration is recommended, but drop-in attendance is welcome.

This event is sponsored by Ian’s Pizza, Chocolate Shoppe, Dutcher Photography, and Teach All to Read. There will be another public literacy event in February 2025.
