General Motors laid off more than 1,700 workers at manufacturing plants in Michigan and Ohio on Wednesday, according to a CNBC report.

A slowdown in the electric vehicle industry was cited, and layoffs included jobs at Detroit’s electric vehicle plant and Ohio’s Ultium Cells battery cell plant. Temporary layoffs were also made at Ultium Cells’ Tennessee plant.

Of the layoff total, 1,200 will come from Detroit and 550 from Ohio. Another 850 temporary layoffs will happen at Ohio’s plant, and Tennessee will see 700 temporary layoffs.

Federal incentives of up to $7,500 for purchasing electric vehicles ended in September, and automakers expect sales for electric vehicles to decline.
