Madison’s police civilian oversight board will continue to receive funding in 2025, The Capital Times reports. The decision was made this week by the City Council to restore a large portion of funding to the agency, which supervises the Office of the Independent Monitor, after Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway proposed eliminating all funding for the oversight board and nearly $200,000 in funding cuts for the Office of the Independent Monitor.
With the City Council’s restoration of $127,000 for the agencies, their total budget is around $400,000. The move ensures the board and Office of the Independent Monitor can afford legal services, a part-time data analyst, conferences, and training.
The funding for the oversight board was redistributed from excess funding for a civilian record’s position in the Madison Police Department and for GPS subscriptions for the city’s fleet operations.
The oversight board has space for up to 13 members. It currently has four vacancies.
