Over 90 educators from FoodWIse, a statewide program providing nutrition education to low-income families and community organizations, are being laid off as the UW-Extension program’s funding is eliminated, WMTV15 reports.
Funded by USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, FoodWIse has been in operation for over three decades.
The congressional budget reconciliation bill, or “Big Beautiful Bill,” signed into law on July 4 cuts all SNAP-Ed funding, effective Sept. 30. FoodWIse will continue its operations until that time, but UW-Extension said it has begun winding down programming and issuing layoff notices.
FoodWIse was one of six SNAP-Ed agencies across Wisconsin, UW-Extension said.
