Lake Mendota was officially declared frozen by the Wisconsin State Climatology Office on Jan. 1, meaning it’s time to plan for the Frozen Assets 5K Run/Walk, an annual event offering a variety of activities on the frozen lake.

The timed or untimed walk, skate, ski, sled or snowshoe event across Lake Mendota is a fundraiser for the Clean Lakes Alliance, a nonprofit that works to improve the quality of the lakes in the Yahara River watershed. Since 2012, the event has raised over $1.2 million.

The event, along with the free Frozen Assets Festival at the Edgewater, takes place on Feb. 7. Festival activities include pond hockey, figure skating, dance, science, large show kite demonstrations and more.
