The architecture school that Frank Lloyd Wright built and called home — Taliesin in Spring Green and Taliesin West in Wright’s winter home of Scottsdale, Arizona — will close in June after 88 years, according to media reports.
The School of Architecture at Taliesin has 30 students currently, and the “gut-wrenching” decision came when it was unable to reach an agreement with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to keep it operating.
The Foundation said the school did not have a sustainable business model, and proposals from both organizations to keep it going through 2021 did not pan out.
Arizona State University is working with current students to transfer credits and complete their degrees.
The famed architecture school opened in 1932 and served 1,200 architects during its heyday who, like Wright, would split their time between both campuses.
Meanwhile, the Foundation plans to expand educational programming for children and adults in the buildings.
Wright, well-known for organic architecture, died in 1959 at the age of 91.
