Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hillside Theatre on the Taliesin compound in Spring Green is reopening after a six-year closure, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The 100-seat theater underwent a $1.1 million renovation that started in 2019, paused and slowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and was finally completed.
The space will open to attendees for a sold-out evening show on June 8 featuring Grammy Award-winning quartet Third Coast Percussion of Chicago. The appearance of the theater remains largely unchanged but includes improvements like LED theater lighting, a new subfloor under the stage, upgraded electrical and plumbing systems, two new green rooms, a set of cameras to livestream events, and accessible bathrooms both backstage and for the audience. There will also be a new heating and air conditioning system, planned to allow the theater’s season to extend into cooler months.
A $320,000 Save America’s Treasures grant from the National Park Service partially funded the project, along with contributions from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Taliesin Preservation.
