A former and as yet unnamed company officer at Smart Motors is being investigated for stealing as much as $3 million from the Madison car dealership over more than 10 years, according to a story in the Wisconsin State Journal.
Between 2004 and his retirement in June, the man allegedly created numerous methods to defraud the company of everything from cash bonuses intended for sales, to payments totaling $797,625 to a bogus company he created more than a decade ago.
Smart Motors also alleges the man made $604,465 worth of unauthorized purchases on his company-issued credit card for personal use including apartments, trips, and Stop-N-Go store purchases.
