The Forest Products Laboratory near the UW-Madison campus remains closed during the government shutdown that began on Oct. 1, according to a Wisconsin Public Radio report.

The lab does everything from prescribed burns, which can reduce tick populations in Wisconsin, to studying how to slow the spread of mold on military munitions crates. The lab also provides datasets for national building codes and safety standards used by manufacturers and private industries.

Some of these projects and tasks are now in jeopardy of shutting down altogether as the federal budget stalemate remains.

The research of wood for the federal government has been headquartered in Madison for over a century. It falls under the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
