The Fitchburg Plan Commission has unanimously approved plans to expand its urban service area to include the 660-acre Northeast Neighborhood east of U.S. Highway 14 and south of Indian Springs Park. It is the first of several approvals needed in a process that could take up to a year or more. Proponents believe expansion will complement Fitchburg’s Uptown development nearby. Opponents claim the development, if approved, would harm the housing market and water quality and cost taxpayers too much.
