The Fitchburg City Council on Tuesday rejected design plans for a new police facility that came in $11 million over budget, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The contentious meeting drew more than 200 attendees.
The proposed 74,560-square-foot facility would replace the current police station in the basement of City Hall and be located at the intersection of Fish Hatchery and Lacy roads. Fitchburg Police Department officials say they have outgrown the department’s current space as the city’s population expands.
The design’s opponents cited the $46 million cost and concerns that the project was being rushed among reasons to reject the resolution put before council members this week. Supporters asserted the design’s potential to provide officers with training opportunities.
The resolution failed on a 4–3 vote; amendments for a $35 million design and $42 million design also failed.
