The Fitchburg City Council opted to delay its vote on a proposed stand-alone police services facility after the project’s price tag came in nearly $15 million over budget, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. Officials are currently exploring options to reduce the cost or garner community support for the extra spending.
The proposed building at the intersection of Fish Hatchery and Lacy Roads would replace the current police station with a new 74,560-square-foot facility. It was anticipated in the city’s 10-year Capital Improvement Plan to cost roughly $35 million, but the plan presented last month by FGM Architects totaled $49.2 million. The addition of a training facility to the design added $3.9 million to its cost; other highlights include three wellness rooms for officer use, a room for community programming, and sustainability features.
Mayor Julia Arata-Fratta last week proposed postponing the vote until Feb. 13.
