A survey from the Wisconsin Center for Manufacturing and Productivity found that 83% of respondents said finding qualified workers for new and open positions was “difficult” in 2021, but some area manufacturers have creative solutions, according to a Wisconsin State Journal story. The survey of 400 manufacturing executives across Wisconsin, conducted from Aug. 16 through Sept. 12, also found that hiring challenges were second only to supply chain problems.

Manufacturers in the Dane County region are trying solutions including raising wages, more flexible hours, remote working options, better benefit packages, and transportation programs.

Midwest Prototyping of Blue Mounds has started a housing assistance program through the State Bank of Cross Plains to allow first-time homebuyers to receive money toward a down payment, and after five years the loan is forgiven. The program aims to help fill the early morning shift where workers need to be at the company between 1 and 3 a.m. Housing close to the plant alleviates the burden of the commute.

Another company, Madison-Kipp Corp., has raised its base pay to $17 to help attract more qualified workers, and DeForest-based manufacturer EVCO Plastics has revamped scheduling to allow for more remote and flexible work.
