Jennifer Javornik, chief partnerships officer at Filament Games, announced Tuesday that Filament Games released its newest game, Credit Climber.
The game was made with Intuit, a global technology platform that helps people and communities overcome financial challenges.
The game is a prevention game, or game that aims to teach players how to make good choices.
“If your game involves ‘good’ and ‘bad’ choices, the player, wanting to win, tends to choose the good choice because they know it’s the ‘right’ choice to ‘win,’ Javornik said in a statement. “Not only does that make for boring gameplay, but it never gives the player the chance to learn how to recover from bad choices, which is an essential lesson to learn.”
Credit Climber tasks players with advising a friend on making financial purchases with credit.
“Most of the time, they take your advice, but sometimes they don’t,” Javornik said. “This now keeps things interesting and gives the player an opportunity to learn not only how to build credit but what to do if their credit starts to fall.”
Credit Climber has been released as a part of Intuit’s Hour of Finance Challenge, where teachers and students can participate and win prizes. The program tasks teachers with including one hour of financial literacy in the classroom with games like Credit Climber or NGPF Money Magic. The challenge runs from Feb. 23 to April 15.
“Indeed, as tax season approaches and W2s make their way out into the world, it’s a poignant reminder that financial literacy is a mandatory skill for human life — and yet, the subject of financial literacy is sometimes overlooked in school curricula,” Brandon Pittser, Filament Games’ vice president of marketing and funding development said in a statement.
Miles Harvey, who works in media literacy and is the head esports coach at Albuquerque Public Schools in New Mexico, has played the game with students at James Monroe Middle School.
He said on social media that the students had a great time and he plans on having all of his scholastic esports students complete the game.
