Federal workers in charge of overseeing the U.S. nuclear stockpile were furloughed on Monday due to the federal government shutdown, according to a CNN report.

About 1,400 federal workers at the National Nuclear Security Administration received furlough notices. Fewer than 400 employees will remain at the agency.

Furloughs will affect nuclear assembly sites first, effectively shutting down the sites.
