On Friday, a federal judge in Rhode Island blocked the Trump administration from ceasing SNAP benefit payments amid the federal government shutdown, CNBC reports.
About 42 million Americans, and 700,000 in Wisconsin, rely on the food assistance SNAP provides.
Judge Jack McConnell said the administration should use $6 billion in contingency funds set aside by Congress to issue at least some SNAP benefits, and that the administration should look into other federal funds to use to keep the program operating while the government is shut down.
The ruling also granted a temporary restraining order to plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit on Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Providence against the administration to maintain benefits.
SNAP benefits are set to run out Saturday.
