Farm bankruptcies are on the rise in Wisconsin, Wisconsin Public Radio reported.
This follows a national trend, with an American Farm Bureau Federation report showing bankruptcy filings for 2025 were 46% higher than in 2024. Over a third of Chapter 12 bankruptcies were filed in the Midwest.
Wisconsin had 16 bankruptcy filings last year. There were only two filings in both 2024 and 2023. Wisconsin also led the nation in Chapter 12 bankruptcies in 2022, though Arkansas, Nebraska and Iowa had more filings in 2025.
Total farm bankruptcies across the nation were lower than highs in 2019 and 2020, but the latest report is an indication of economic hardship.
