The FAA said it will have to reduce air traffic by 10% at 40 major airports beginning Friday unless the federal government shutdown is resolved, according to a CNN report.
This could result in thousands of flight cancellations each day.
Staffing shortages at airports for air traffic controllers are already an issue, and thousands of workers will miss their second full paycheck next week.
Major hubs like New York’s three airports, Chicago, Seattle and more are said to be on a preliminary list of sites expected to have cancellations.
