The Federal Aviation Administration lifted restrictions that led to the cancellation of thousands of flights, including cancellations at 40 major airports, during the federal government shutdown, according to the Associated Press.
Regular flight schedules resumed on Monday at 5 a.m. Central time after restrictions were lifted on Sunday.
During the government shutdown, air traffic controllers, already at low staffing numbers, began calling in to work sick as paychecks were halted.
The flight restrictions had been in place since Nov. 7 at airports in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.
The record 43-day government shutdown ended on Nov. 12.
