Former Vernon County employee Kayla J. Fortney, 30, of Gays Mills, was arrested Thursday for embezzling county funds, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. Her arrest by the Viroqua Police Department followed a six-week investigation.

Fortney was booked into the Vernon County jail, tentatively charged with theft greater than $10,000. On Friday, she appeared in Vernon County Circuit Court and was released on a $5,000 signature bond, pending an upcoming court appearance on Sept. 6.

The Vernon County District Attorney will seek formal charges.
