Gov. Tony Evers celebrated International Transgender Day of Visibility by vetoing bills that “makes Wisconsin a less safe, less inclusive and less welcoming place for LGBTQ people and kids.”
One of the bills would have affected youth who participate school sports by designating teams as either male, female or coed based on the biological sex of students involved in the sport.
Another would require school boards to adopt a policy to record student legal names and pronouns in school records. And yet another would allow a civil cause of action against a health care provider who performs a gender transition procedure.
“Governor Evers has shown incredible leadership for LGBTQ+ rights over his terms as Wisconsin’s governor. We are so grateful for his unwavering support for our community, and especially our trans kids, here in Wisconsin,” Abigail Swetz, executive director of Fair Wisconsin, said in a statement in response to the vetoes.
