Gov. Tony Evers signed a bill on Thursday allowing people to place online bets if the computer servers are located on Wisconsin Native American tribe lands, Wisconsin Public Radio reported.
All 11 tribes in Wisconsin said they backed the law.
“I have heard from each of the 11 affected Tribes that this bill offers an opportunity for their governments and for their people to improve the quality of life, health, and stability of their communities,” Evers said in a statement accompanying his signing of the legislation. “As governor, I am responsible for ensuring the state of Wisconsin upholds Tribal treaty rights and appropriately respects Tribal sovereignty in Wisconsin.”
He also said in his message that the tribes should work together to share the “risks and rewards” of online gaming.
